AFC Energy plc - Powering the Hydrogen Economy

Amitava Roy awarded PhD on Alkaline Fuel Cells and Electrolysers

August 1st, 2006

Dr Amitava Roy, who joined AFC Energy in April 2006, gained a PhD from Loughborough University in July for his thesis entitled ‘Dynamic and transient modeling of electrolysers and fuel cells for renewable power operation’. This was based on a field demonstration of an 8MWh energy storage system for the university’s Hydrogen and Renewable Integration project.

Dr Roy has expertise in several key fields which make him an ideal candidate to work for AFC Energy.

He has designed and developed the specification of electrodes, cell stack and systems for alkaline electrolysers and fuel cells. He also has experience in, preparing electrode catalysts for alkaline systems, corrosion analysis, and the optimisation of electrode performance for voltage, current, temperature, pressure and transient operation. This will be instrumental in helping AFC Energy further develop the ultra low-cost electrode that forms the cornerstone of its technology.

Dr Roy also has detailed knowledge of stack design, and the purification and handling of hydrogen, both factors which will help AFC to bring its technology to the marketing stage.

Howard White, Chairman of AFC Energy PLC said:

“Commercially viable fuel cells are vital to the evolution of the hydrogen economy. AFC is at the forefront of commercial fuel cell development because it attracts scientists of the calibre of Dr Roy. He joins the excellent and experienced team that has already put AFC Energy well on the way to producing an affordable and effective fuel cell”.
