AFC Energy Launches Zero Emission H-PowerTM EV Charger System

SURREY, UK – AFC Energy (AIM: AFC), the leading hydrogen power company, has today announced the launch of its zero emissions electric vehicle (EV) charger based on hydrogen fuel cell technology. The self-contained, zero emission charging system overcomes issues associated with poor grid coverage to provide rapid electric vehicle (EV) charging anywhere it is needed.

In the UK, a recent study commissioned by Scottish Power found that to meet EV deployment targets, almost £100bn of new investment is required to upgrade the network and deploy dedicated EV charging stations throughout the country. For fleet operators, commercial vehicles and even private and public car park operators, large scale rapid charging is a corporate necessity, which in instances cannot be met without localised grid upgrades. AFC Energy’s system is designed to meet these needs by delivering an EV charger that can be safely fuelled using a variety of hydrogen sources whilst operating at optimum efficiency to enable rapid charging rates when and where it is required.

“It can no longer be denied that EVs have become part of today’s mainstream automotive experience, but there are many areas where infrastructure is constraining mass deployment,” explained AFC Energy, CEO, Adam Bond. “Our system is independent of the grid and delivers EV charging in the most remote off-grid locations or in highly populated urban areas where supply is over-subscribed. With this system, we provide a solution to support the industry’s emerging need for a national network of EV charge-points.”

When containerised alongside existing and complimentary technology, the system forms part of a modern technology strategy enabling customers to map out a path to net-zero carbon emissions, whilst containing the cost of power and growing EV charging capability. Mechanical and electrical components can be housed within an ISO container which is insulated and fitted with the environmental controls to allow operation in a wide range of climates without the odour or noise associated with diesel generators. The Modular AFC Energy H-PowerTM systems will be available in three standard configurations which can provide up to 100 charge points to a single site.

To support the new system, hydrogen sourcing and auxiliary equipment is also available from third party suppliers through AFC Energy for integration into the final product solution. AFC Energy can work with all EV charging platforms to provide its system as part of an integrated emission-free charging system.

Key advantages of the H-Power TM EV Charger, including:

  • Recharging with Net-Zero emissions;

  • Modular and rapid charge ready;

  • Removes or delays the need for costly grid augmentation and upgrades;

  • Provides a de-risked solution allowing car park operators to respond rapidly to growing EV demand;

  • Can be operated completely off grid or in conjunction with grid power; and

  • Scalable from 2 to over 100 charge points at a single site with limited increase in footprint.

About AFC Energy

AFC Energy plc is commercialising a scalable alkaline fuel cell system, to provide clean electricity for on and off grid applications. The technology, pioneered over the past twelve years in the UK, is now being deployed in electric vehicle chargers, off-grid decentralised power systems and industrial gas plants as part of a portfolio approach to the decarbonisation of local electricity needs.
