HydroX-Cell (L)™

HydroX-Cell(L)TM deliver zero emission power where needed and is the original AFC Energy Alkaline Fuel Cell.

Having benefited from over a decade of development and design, the HydroX-Cell(L)TM offers a market leading Alkaline Fuel Cell module designed to support industry’s transition to a zero-emission carbon footprint.

Capable of deployment in mid (>10kW) to large scale (>MW) industrial applications, the HydroX-Cell(L)TM delivers:

  • Standardised 10kW modules
  • Zero carbon, NOx and SOx emissions
  • Leading fuel cell efficiency (>60%)
  • Use of a low-grade industrial hydrogen feedstock
  • Fully designed and engineered balance of plant

At the heart of every HydroX-Cell(L)TM is its unique ability to accept lower grade, and therefore lower cost, hydrogen fuel.  Whether sourced direct from industry or as a derivative of ammonia, there is a cost benefit of opening a world of new possibilities in zero emission, off-grid power generation.

In extensive electrode testing with market leading electro-chemist and technology partner, Industrie De Nora, the HydroX-Cell(L)TM has shown superior longevity and performance enhancements, removing many myths surrounding alkaline fuel cells of years gone by.

With modularity and scalability at the heart of its engineering, the HydroX-Cell(L)TM allows bespoke or standardised units to be easily configured and connected to generate the power you need, when you need it.

When containerised, all principle mechanical and electrical interconnections are housed within a standardised ISO container, simplifying and reducing the cost of installation and transportability to the end user.

The container is insulated and fitted with the required environmental controls to allow operation in a wide range of climates, without the odour or noise traditionally associated with diesel engines, making it ideal for sensitive and built-up operating environments.

Fast and easy deployment, without the need for material civil works and expenditure, make the HydroX-Cell(L)TM a key part of any decarbonised off-grid power solution.

  • 40’ ISO shipping container footprint
  • Capable of running on direct hydrogen or cracked ammonia
  • Revised HydroX-Cell(L)TM stack configuration (under development) for improved power output

When deployed alongside existing and complementary technology (e.g. battery storage), the HydroX-Cell(L)TM will form part of a portfolio technology strategy enabling customers to map out a glide path to nett zero carbon emissions while containing the cost of power.

Auxiliary Equipment for hydrogen generation equipment (ammonia crackers, electrolysers powered by renewable energy sources) are also available from third party suppliers through AFC Energy for integration into the final product solution.

Ammonia as a Hydrogen Carrier

 Ammonia, NH3, is one of the world’s best and lowest cost carriers of hydrogen.

Key benefits of ammonia as a hydrogen carrier include:

  • 3-4 times more energy dense than hydrogen alone
  • Higher energy density means fewer logistics and transportation costs in delivery to remote locations
  • Lower propensity to create lethal hazards when transported, stored and used
  • Low cost
  • Being in a liquid state at ambient temperatures
  • Having its own existing supply chain and distribution network
  • Being capable of production without greenhouse emissions – “Green Ammonia”

 

HydroX-Cell(L)TM has been extensively tested on Hydrogen derived from cracked ammonia. Ammonia once cracked provides, by volume, 75% hydrogen, 25% nitrogen and between 200-600 parts per million of ammonia. Despite this mixed feed and due to the Alkaline Fuel Cell’s unique qualities, the AFC Energy fuel cell has shown negligible performance degradation versus 99.9% grade Hydrogen.
